Meaningful, manageable steps you can take towards a more ecological & sustainable yard:

1. Reduce/eliminate backyard lights. Light pollution inhibits night flying insects’ ability to navigate. If you must have light, use yellow bulbs.

 2. Plant a pollinator garden of ANY SIZE! Any size is truly significant! Gardens contribute to habitat corridors and way stations for insect and bird migration. Native plant nurseries are now abundant. There are now many small businesses that will help you plant a native garden and provide education.

 3. Plant an oak tree: oaks support more life forms than any other North American tree! Read Doug Tallamy’s book “The Nature of Oaks” to learn about the rich ecology of our most “Essential Native Trees.”

 4. Reduce your turf grass area.

4. Use less energy & water
5. Provide higher occupant comfort
6. Sell for a premium! Comparable homes with green features such as solar PV, high efficiency appliances & heating/cooling systems and native habitat gardens, sell for more.
